I have devoted the last 15 plus years of my life to breeding the healthiest, best well tempered and most beautiful miniature long haired dachshunds in the world. With health being my number one priority, temperament is right up there with it. DNA testing and pedigree research is one of the most important parts of breeding. DNA testing, pedigree research and temperament are all checked before adding a dog to my program. All 3 of these factors MUST be perfect to be a part of the Sugarbakers breeding family. There are no exceptions. They cannot just have a clear DNA test and have a lousy temperament. Temperaments are the result of the nurturing and socialization of the dog. No dog is perfect, but it is unethical to breed an aggressive dog or one that is extremely anti-social even if they come from champion confirmation parents and have flawless DNA results. They MUST check off ALL 3. No shortcuts! Temperaments can be inherited, and most of the time cannot be corrected. Dachshunds are very unique in the way they look, and act. Our dachshunds do amazingly well with other pets, children (well behaved children that are taught to treat animals gently and respectfully) and the elderly. By the time you bring home your Sugarbakers puppy, they have been around children, cats, other dogs, people and have been exposed to all sorts of sounds and environments.
